    A01 question

Puzzling how a steel that was once considered a good knife steel is now considered so-so. Personally, I think that something like 1075 is a perfectly good blade steel. Doug

    Carbon addition question

Wouldn't that be something like how blister steel was made where the iron bars were sealed in crucibles with a carbon source and then cooked in an oven for several hours? Doug

    Interesting anvil comparison

You actually want an anvil that has a good bounce. If it doesn't rebound the hammer well then it absorbs the energy instead of reflecting it bact into the work. Doug

    New from NC

I especially line the brown handled one. On the blue handled one try doing some hard, not abusive, work with it and see what that handle tells you. Doug

    old age

Well, I still think that it's better to have birthdays rather than not but this has not been a good year. Cataracts removed in both eyes and my prostate operated on to let me pee. Still things could be worse. I occasionally use a cane but not a wheelchair so things could definitely be worse...

Damascus and High Carbon Steels are not food safe -- aka the Jay Fisher Rabbit Hole

If you cut up room temp meat with a knife you wash it before chopping up the salad fixing with it. Problem solved. Doug

I third the suggestion to try gum tragacanth before burnishing. I got mine from Tandy. Doug

Didn't plan on smithing, but I couldn't resist

Nice looking anvil. Don't get carried away with the hammer, about 2 pounds or one kilo will let you work for long periods of time. Doug

    Peter Wright anvil value?

Definitely do not grind the face smooth. If you do you may grind away too much of the hardened face and destroy what rebound it has left. I would leave it as is. Doug
