    Makers Mark choice??

I agree with all of the above. Option 1 has tons of personality. I could use some advice on where to get stencils made. I just got my new etching machine but need to do some quality stencils of various sizes. I couldn't afford the Marking Methods machine that Bruce once recommended that I get...

Where to get leather and a few other questions

Chuck, Thanks again for posting all of the leather info. I have returned to those links several times now. I've ordered a maker stamp from Grey Ghost Graphics and am going to order an 8 holes per inch overstitch marker from Jeremiah Watts. Watts has all kinds of super nice tools and otherwise...

Where to get leather and a few other questions

Chuck, Josh is right. You just gave us THE GOODS on leather and leather related stuff! Can anyone give me some advice on working with Sting Ray skin? One of the guys down at Tandy said that all of the little bumps on the skin are filled with calcium and are bone like. He said that he recommends...

Looking for some advice about lining leather for sheaths

Marlin, Never tried pigskin but want to. Been wanting to do lined sheath also. I'm close to a Tandy store & they tell me that deer skin is chrome tanned which will harm carbon steel I'm told. Tandy also suggests going with light weight leather glued back to back or a mid weight leather glued to...

Best first home forge/heat treat set up

Oh, if you do go with the HF 1 x 30 get some better belts at Jantz or somewhere similar that carries that size. I like the Orange Blaze belts for stock removal but I'd recommend to also get some J weight ones (Klingspor I think) that bend into small areas like finger slots. Play that grinder...

Best first home forge/heat treat set up

I started out with a 1 x 30 HF belt/disc grinder. It finally took a dump on me and I got another but bought the protection plan. I have taken one back for a new replacement. I do like it for hard to reach areas and to do finesse grinding. In between my two HF's I bought a Kalamazoo 2" x 48" with...

Fixed blade handles - need help

I've only made around 20 knives but I use Devcon and so far they're all still stuck together (not in one big clump or anything like that!). I have used Corbys but on one knife I did grind too much and just about went thru - you can see a slightly depressed dimple in the center of it. If I have...

    What RPM buffer to buy?

I got my buffer today. Went with a 3/4 HP 1800 RPM model. Darn thing is HUGE! I was about half scared to turn it on. It is soooo quiet though. Had to pull out one of my knives and buff it out again. Had been using a grinder with buffs on it but the shafts were so short it was hard to buff the...

which Needle File set to buy?

I'm a newbie but I just buy a new set from HF every few knives. They work good until they don't. I try to keep em clean with a file card. Maybe you can narrow down your selection by looking at which HF files you use the most. I tend to use the square, triangle and round ones first - and then use...

    What RPM buffer to buy?

Wayne, Thanks for the advice! There are way too many jokes that could come from that type of carpet but I'll take the high road instead!

    What RPM buffer to buy?

Steve, Slatroni, Rhinoknives, Ed, Rudy & Wayne, Thanks for all of your input! I am honored to have so many years of knifemaking experience to guide me in this decision! I think that I've made up my mind to go with the slower 1800 RPM speed Baldor model. I may have to fashion myself a leather...

    What RPM buffer to buy?

Mark, Thanks for the info. Based upon this it appears that the 3600 RPM buffer would be best for the metals. I guess that I will just have to go quick and light on stag, woods, micarta, ctek and everything else. I will have to see if I can cut an paste your two charts. Good stuff...! Tom

    What RPM buffer to buy?

Bladegrinder & Randy, Thanks for your input! But now I'm on the fence. I guess that maybe it's just a matter of preference and getting to know whatever machine you have. I'm not going to outrun a flying knife at either 200 or 400 mph! Maybe I'll just flip a coin....Can anyone else help me out...

    My new Claude Scott sheath

Awesome work guys! Claude is to sheathmaking what you are to knifemaking!!! Love that damascus too! In the future can you post some pictures of the backs of the sheaths? I have been trying to work on a horizontal belt sheath but want to secure it in an aesthetically pleasing way.

    Is brass outdated?

I've only made a couple of dozen knives but I still like and use brass. I have only sold one of my knives and it had brass bolsters and ironwood handle slabs. I give most of my knives to family and friends at this point - at least until my work improves to a point where I'm comfortable with it...

I got my first 2x72 but

The bubble jig is a great idea! I got one and it improved my grinding 1000% in a day! Get one, I seriously doubt that you will be sorry. Fred Rowe (the maker of BJ) is a great guy and will help you with any questions too - he did with me.
