My "hunter gray" finish, Ferric Chloride acid etch on D2, clean up with baking soda.
Simply sandblasted.

If it is alcohol based dye, you may want to try cutting it with denatured alcohol. A lot. Obviously, try on scrap leather until you get the effect you want.
Also, if you have an air brush, you can feather it in with some practice.
