110 ht oven

Is it possible to make a heat treat oven that I can plug into 110?

I want to build one that I can control the heat good and I figured a electric oven would be best but I do not ave access to 220.

if so can anyone tell me where I can get the parts and what parts I would need?

this will be a long wip, just buying parts here and there when I can afford them.
I do not know anything about the controls,or the elements.

I tried using 110 and it took about two hours to get 900 degrees.
I went to 220 and was at 1900 degrees in half an hour.
Is your breaker box close to your shop? My plan wasto just run a line directly out of my box but my brother in law had a great idea to just use the dryer outlet in the garage.

my problem is.........................

this is my shop

I built a ice shack that I am going to be using as a work shop instead of an ice shack though..... its 6x8 and I am going to build a bench and some shelfs in there, should make a nice little workshop. I will have to run my power to it using extention cords running from the house thats why I can only have 110.

I can't tell you how much I admire your 'want to'. I think that you would probably do better to send out SS knives for heat treat until you can afford to wire your shop. One or two at a time would be a little expensive but six or so would not be too bad. If you decide to go with a 10xx steel, you can heat treat them with a 1 or 2 brick forge and temper them in your oven with Mama's permission.

Just my .02.

Mickley posted a bit ago about a new Evenheat that ran on 110 for a pretty good price -- you might want to check out his site.

I have an evenheat 120v ht oven and I do most every thing with it.
Oh and Im diggin the pink lunch box you have there!

Hay Bigern,Is your shop so far from home that you have to take your lunch?
He He---Jerry

Ha ha funny guys2thumbs actually it is some sort of toy record player!!cool 1

I do not know If an extension cord would work for 220 the cord would have to be almost 50 feet long because where I am going to put my little work shop is on the other side and end of the dryer plug in.

If I can do 110 I feel that would be best. I know Tracy sells them but with cash being tight I think I could make one quite a bit cheaper if I can figure out what controls and elements and what not that I need.
I got the steel for the housing of it.
I just do not know where to get the stuff I need, what stuff I need, and how to wire it up!!

thanks for all the responses so far!!

Lots of knifemakers including myself have used these products with satisfaction:
http://auberins.com/

I converted an old wax burnout kiln 110v. Just added the auberins controlls.
I haven't gone beyond 1700 degees don't know the max temp. but will go to 1500 in 1 hour and 1000 in 1/2 hr.

Thanks for the links,

From Aubers website can anyone tell me what.........
http://www.auberins.com/

Pid temp controller
Thermocouple
I would need?
also is there anything else I need from them?

Then from bcs.....
http://www.budgetcastingsupply.com/Heating_Elements_Controllers.php

I think I would just need 1 #7101 element

then just firebricks and High temp wire.

Is there anything else I would need as far as parts to have everything to build a 110 plug in HT oven?

Then I just got to figure out how to wire it!!! lol
Also what is a safe way to have an on off switch mounted to the control box so I do not have to unplug it when I open the door?
would a regular light switch work?

Thanks for all the help so far!

I'll post some pics of my oven which is of similar construction of a lot of ovens.
I replaced the door brick with kaowool because the door frame was rusted out. I found that the kao wool made a great seal and was much lighter.

Hope this has helped. I'm no expert byfar, just my experience with this oven.
