Knife making tools?

Hello everyone. New to this forum as you can see. Recommended by someone to come here from survivalistboards so I thought I would give it a whirl.

I have been interested in knives for awhile and want to give knife making a try. Also I need something to sharpen tools and such cuz there seems to be a rising need for sharpening in my house.

I was looking at the following:
http://delaware.craigslist.org/tls/1709427526.html
http://www.edmwi.com/home/edm/page_1606
http://www.edmwi.com/home/edm/page_380_30/electric_belt_sander___1_x_30_inch___powerful.html I was looking at this one from harbor freight but it wouldnt let me get to it on the sight.

So would these belt sanders be good for knive making and would the grinding wheel be of any use? And also what are any other basic tools that would be usefull and cheaper?

For dabbling and recreational knifemaking they might get you by. If you ever get serious about making knives, your going to want a belt grinder/sander with more power and more precision. Most folks who are either semi-serious, or serious use a 2" X 72" belt grinder/sander.

The "Good" belt grinders are not cheap....but they are well worth the price.

Well I am just dabbeling I think and on a budget so it is harder. But of all 3 what would you reccomend? I mean I know it is unfair cuz one is homemade and the other 2 is production but I am just testing the ground here.

To be honest, I simply can't recommend any of them, because in my opinion, none of them will do what your going to want to do when it comes to grinding a blade. I know I would rule out the one on Craigslist.....that just looks like junk that someone is trying to unload.

At the very least I would encourage you to find at least a 1" X 42" belt. If your in the U.S., at least you can find different grit belts for it. With the other ones your likely going to be very limited on what belts grits you can get.

Hello, I believe Mr Caffrey is right on!! Dont get that one on craigs list! lol
I would also recommend a 1X42 belt sander as a great starting point, Delta or Harbor freight would have these and the costs is well under 200.00 delivered.

Then as you learn, you can upgrade. I still have a 1 X 42 on the workbench in my shop..

Good luck and most of all, Have fun..

Search for a Jet Multitool. It's a cheap way to get started. I ground blades on one for my first two years and I still use it for handles.
