? about kilns

Hi

I have never used a kiln before and was looking at an older skutt that was for sale. It had a round knob to adjust the temperature and a guage with a needle to measure the temperature. It is a 110v model with a small chamber. When we turned it on the temperature started to rise in the chamber. After 10 minutes the needle was reading around 500 degrees, but the coils were not getting red at all. I was wondering if this was normal or how long it takes the coils to turn red? If this is not mormal what do you think needs to be repaired?

Thank you for your time,

Justin

go by the temp gauge and when the coils get hot enough, they will turn red.
