Bronze pins.

Hello folks,

Would bronze welding rods be Ok to make pins?
Maybe for pinning scales or even pivot pins (slipjoints)?
I have some in different hardness and i was just thinking...huh1

I've heard of makers using them for pins,
but for a pivot?
I'd be concerned that they'd wear faster.
Myself,I wouldn't use anything other than hardened s.s.(for pivots)

You can use basically any kind of metal for pins as long as you like the looks of it. For a pivot, you would want something that can be hardened so it wouldn't wear prematurely.

I use bronze welding rod for handle pins, I think they look good in a wood handle. here's a photo of a recent knife with bronze pins(yea I know the pins aren't lined up).
On the other hand, I wouldn't use bronze for a pivot pin but it does makes nice washers.

Thanks for your comments guys and I'll take your advise and use SS for pivots.

I'm only a beginner but i like to use what is at hand to save $$.

Cheers..John.
