I bought some to play with and cannot seem to anneal it properly. I heat to non-magnetic and place in vermiculite with hot railroad spikes and let it cool overnight. Tried to straighten the blades and broke (2) of them. They were very fine grained and hard.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like your annealing procedure is ok. The data sheet suggests a hold at 1450F followed by a very slow cool.

Try soaking the blades at 1200 and then straightening while hot. You can get away with straightening a soft blade cold at times, but Its a good idea to straighten a blade above 400F.

It's such a slow steel that you are getting air hardening.
DO NOT!!! go above non-magnetic!!! Just get it dull red, so that it still grabs a magnet and try to slow cool.
You may need to do it a couple times, but that is exactly what is happening.

thanks for the help. I will say the grain structure sure looks good after I break the blade and start cursing.
