? on etching a blade

All,
I've just started blacksmithing and have a lot of ?, but my first is about etching a differential HT blade. First what grit do you sand to before etching?, second I what to put a brass guard on it so obviously I have to etch it first but if I solder the guard in place I'll need to clean up after which will mess up the etching job around the guard so how would you fix that? Not solder it in place? use a Q-tip to locally etch the affected area? something I haven't thought of yet?????
Thanks
Greg

For user knives I normally go to 600g then etch, then clean up with steel wool and a metal polish.
I make gaurds an interference fit onto the tang, however in your case if you were to use JB weld you wont have the cleanup issue associated with solder.
Cheers Bruce
