heat treating a file knife

I have a file that dad gave me before he passed away and i was thinking bout making a knife out of it and was wondering what the heat treat sequence is. Do i treat it like i would 1095 or any other steel. I have no idea what brand it is its not stamped on it.
It is a kinda narrow file so i was thinking a bird and trout stile knife would be nice.
File knives is a new ball game to me that i rely don't know a thing about. I see some of you guys making outstanding knives out of them a i want to learn a little. I am thinking this would be a great keepsake and a useable one at that.

Heat treating like 1095 would be a good guess. Even if it was of W1 or W2 the heat treatment would be much the same. Be aware, however, that it could be from a case hardened steel and might not have enough carbon in the alloy to make a good knife. That's just a chance that you will have to take with old files.
