Today was the first time i have used a muffle to heat treat in my propane forge, and i gotta say i like the results. I threw some charcoal in to reduce the atmosphere then normalized a couple of times. Quenched in canola and had no warping.

i just had to share.

Rustyboy, I've found that putting a piece of soft wood like pine in the back of the muffle works better than charcoal, or hardwood. The wood fills the whole muffle with gasses, volatiles abd flames, which shields the steel better. I made my muffle extra long so I could put a more substantial sized piece in. Try it and see what you think.

Congrats and a great idea throwing in some wood. I wish I had of thought of it when I was using a baffle.

Tai - Ill try the green wood, i've been using the plain hardwood with good results, but hey if it reduces the atmosphere even more I'm all for it.

I like pine, cedar and juniper. They all have a nice aroma too. :)

Just to make sure,... it's not wet or green wood. It's dry seasoned wood, but not really hard wood like mesquite, oak or the likes.
