Etching Question?

Hi All. I was just wondering how one goes about etching the spine of a Damascus fixed blade after the handle material has been installed? Is that something that has to be done only on the metal alone?

After asking around and viewing another thread, the answer to this question was this. It is best to use bolts not pins in this situation, however you could use either as long as they can be removed. The scales were attached using a pair of dummy bolts, no epoxy. The scales were then fit and finished to final dimensions. The dummy bolts were removed and the blade is etched. Scales reattached using new bolts and epoxy is used if you feel you need a barrier against moisture. The bolts were then trimmed flush and finished by hand to desired finish. Let me add that this transition area between metal bolt and handle material should be approached with a flat backer for the sandpaper as not to dish out the softer material around the pin.
