The Christmas Knife

For Christmas my family picks names and makes (not buys) presents. We have fun with it and the things made are of legend. not really. So my son loves to go all out (he's 13) and this year he wanted to make a knife. I said ok and off he went. I helped with the edge grind and tech support he did everything else. Once he had the shape and edge I went to my buddy Brad's (BZ Knives) in Homestead and heat treated (61.5) then in the cryo (62.5) and back home for two 500 degree tempers. The details are S30V, Curly Maple handle with brass pins and a rounded edge (don't know what to call it).

Hey he did a fantastic job, I am sure who ever gets that for a Christmas gift will be truly pleased, and proud!!!!!

The cryo quench got the knife to 62.5 on the Rockwell hardness tester.

brought it back from Brad's and cleaned it up. I made an etcher out of a 9 volt and some salt water. I actually works good, this is testing under the handle. Glued up the handle and started to shape it. at this point I really wanted to do it but he wouldn't let me help.

Wonderful experience together. I would like to do that with my son. Perhaps after the holidays we can get some time to do something like that.

We then rubbed oil into the handle and polished it up with a buffer and wax.
