Almost ready to put a grind on my first knife

Hello all, I have been slowly making my first knife from an old file. I have the design cut out and am in the process of thinning the entire piece. It started life as a 5/32" file, I would like to get the blade and handle thickness down to 1/8th. I am lacking lots of nice power tools and have been spending a long time with a large flat file in my vice and taking material of of each side slowly and steadily. When I am ready to put a grind on it, should I try to use the file or my harbor freight 1x30" belt sander? I feel I can get more control with my file than my grinder. Opinions would be most helpful.

My advice would be to start your bevels with the 1x30 and clean them up with the file.

That, or do some practice runs on some junk steel until your comfortable finish grinding on a 1x30.

Either way, it sounds like your well on your way into the addiction... ;)
