Bowie with polished bone handle

Hi guys,

This knife has a 10" blade of 1095. The guard and other furniture are mild steel, the handle is polished cow bone. The blade has been lightly etched, giving an almost wootz-like look to the blade (a happy accident). All comments are welcome.

That turned out quite nicely. I agree about the wootz and walrus looks of the 1095 and cow bone. Is that a part of leg bone?

Thanks, Stormcrow

Yes, it's part of the leg bone, very thick walls and solid as heck. Hollow, of course, so the tang went straight through. Filled with Gorilla expanding glue and tightened with the retaining nut. It's fairly difficult to use bone, as working it can cause cracks to appear. This one worked like a champ, no cracks, and a nice sheen. I assume the wootz like look is alloy banding, but I've never seen it on carbon steel to this extent. I liked the look of it, so I kept it.

I've long wondered if a charcoal forge affects steel differently than a propane forge. Adds more carbon to the steel, perhaps? Doesn't Tim use charcoal?
