Mesquite handle scales

I've been approached to make left handed liner lock using mesquite for the handles. Anyone use this wood or have advice on using this wood? Thanks, Dan

I use it all the time, and it's one of my favorite handle materials. Several things are worth mentioning. First, wear a respirator. It's pretty hard stuff with more silicates than a lot of other woods, and the dust is not good. Second, it's one of the most stable woods on the planet. You can get it stabilized if you want to, but if there ever were a wood that didn't need it, this one is a top contender. I like to use an oil finish sanded in with 1000+ grit paper.

An added advantage is that you can use scraps to smoke your chicken with later.

Travis, Thanks for the information, I'll have a bit more confidence that the knife scales I'm making should be stable.
P.S. I'm getting hungry for grilled chicken. Thanks, Dan

Dan,here's one I just finished,and delivered.
Coustomer was very happy. It was finished to 600
with Danish oil.

God bless,Keith
