From a job. A customer wanted the blades on a pair of China balisong trainers sharpened. Seems to be hardened 440A. Ground freehand on a 1x42" Kalamazoo grinder. I can't wait to get my hands on some 1095, 1080, 5160, or hopefully O1. The father in law gave me a couple of files. Just waiting til our next BBQ to anneal them.

You might want to try tempering one of the files down in your oven. 1 hour or so at 400, cool and then repeat. When you grind you will have to treat it like a post heat treated blade. Don't let it get too hot when grinding. If the file is case hardened you won't be able to use this method. If the files are made by Nicholson you should be OK so I've been told. I've made 1 knife this way and it turned out nice and holds a good edge. One last thing, you may eat up some belts going this route.
