Hi; I'm brand new to making. When using a mill/drill; is it best to use a milling table vise or the hold down clamping tools? I'm setting up a small basic shop and don't want to waste any money on the wrong gear. I know making won't be easy, but I will succeed with the help of you guys. Thanks in advance.

A GOOD milling vise.....there are a lot of pretty intense forces going on during a milling operation. There are some jobs where I have used a Magnetic Chuck, but I have found that most of the time a mag-chuck doesn't have the holding power need.

If you stay with it, you will likely need both before it's all over. Get on MSC's mailing list and you can get some great prices from time to time.
