Another 'crate',for a friend

Ironwolf

The Knife Poet
So, a few friends and I have gotten a 'gift exchange' thing goin',in which what you send to a buddy represents you,and/or your area/country/culture...
It can be something bought, something you already own,or something you make.
Well,I got no money, ain't got much worth anything to anyone but me,
so I decided to build another 'crate' since I was in that flow...
I figure he can keep old keepsakes in it or sumthin'.
Other than the curly black walnut, the other woods are Canadian,
(the maple)and, from my immediate area:some cool acacia burl (inside the crate,at the back),some red cedar (the Bountiful B.C. plaque),some arbutus (the inside, bottom, and dark edges of the lid).
It's all sanded to 800 grit, then polished: you can see reflections off the lid.And I found some really old brass hinges I had kicking around, and dimpled 'em to make 'em look hand-made.
Those are a pair of replica wolf's claws on the front of the lid,to lift it with.
And the tiny, old woodscrews for the hinges are from the '40's or '50's:
all that I have left of a landmark hardware store (Paine Hardware) that was built in '39,but burned to ashes a few years back.
(the last thing I bought before it burned: I found a little box of them under a low shelf that no-one had looked under in 40+ years).

So,ya think he'll like it?

That is awesome Wolf.Looks like a lot of thought went into that one.
He's gonna love it my brother.

God bless,Keith

You can't call that a crate. It's great to see someone turn what many would consider scrap into something attractive and useful.

Wow, Wolf! You out did yourself on that one. That's beautiful and it's something that can be passed down to the next generation someday.

DUDE , that is beautiful . You got some talent there. If he don't like it I'll PAY for it.

wow.....good job

lol,thank you Dwane!
These are real basic, simple construction, with most of the work in the hand-work:
hand-cut,fitted,sanded and polished.
Each one takes from 10-15 hours.
I also do finger-joined boxes where there's more emphasis on seamless joints.
One thing about all my boxes,I book-match as much of the material as possible,
just like my knife handles.
If you're interested in a trade, let me know,
I love to barter!

So I decided it didn't gleam enough, and spent another hour buffing it again...
I'm happy with it now that I can see my reflection in it :)
